Expounding on the visual lexicon and design philosophy of its original creator, the new Nautilus is a refreshingly seductive addition to Miami’s Art Deco South Beach strip. Designed in the 1950’s by famed architect, Morris Lapidus, known for his exuberant panache, Lapidus’s iconic spirit is preserved and elevated in its re-imagination as a sanctuary for art and travel. Much to my thrill, I experienced the depths of hotelier and collector Jason Pomeranc’s art entrenched stance during the vigor of Art Basel Miami. A testament to this focus, the Nautilus collaborated with my friends at Artsy to execute a series of bold site specific moves curated by the energetic vision of Artsy’s Elena Soboleva. With the legacy of an architect known for his ability to inspire a surge of emotions, Lapidus once placed live alligators in one of his hotel lobbies so that guests would “know they were in Florida” Elena’s curation felt surprising and effortless with a touch of impulse that is what keeps me wanting and wondering.
