All rolling prairie land and magical West Texas sky, Robert Irwin catches the preciousness of place in his new site specific permanent work at the Chinati Foundation, a culmination of his explorations in space, light and the human experience. Marfa is a land of aesthetic nirvana for those such as myself, who find their religion in minimalist art and environment. On the site of Donald Judd’s expansive pure art compound, the Chinati Foundation, Irwin has taken over the former military base’s hospital building and realized a building as sculpture as art. A portal into shimmering awareness formally divided into two sides, you choose your procession through space, enter into darkness or light. Glimmering Kimberly McDonald x Gemfields rubies and wrapped in Rosetta Getty black and white, the crimson gem for treasured earth, nature and vitality, backed in black as the symbolic opposite facing white light.
